PCL Protect and PCL Protect+ Warranty Economics
PCL warranty program

PCL Protect and PCL Protect+

Build an order to estimate the five-year upgrade, or plan the costs of the whole warranty program.

PCL provides labels for approved warranty returns. PCL Protect: PCL pays standard shipping both ways in Year 1; in Years 2–3, the customer pays the inbound label cost and PCL pays return shipping. PCL Protect+: PCL pays standard shipping both ways through Year 5. Any customer-paid label cost is confirmed before the label is issued.

PCL Protect Included

Three years of defect coverage, plus eligible Lifetime LED coverage.

PCL Protect+ Optional upgrade

Five years of defect coverage, replacement-first service and standard shipping both ways paid by PCL.

Planning estimates. Product eligibility, prices and service capacity need approval before sale.

Formula and order rules

Per product (incremental to included PCL Protect), summed over covered years 2..term: Years 2-3 claims x (swap overhead + inbound leg*) * only when the church pays inbound under PCL Protect Years 4-5 claims x (non-LED repair + 2 legs + swap overhead + new-unit share x unit cost) (5-year only) Every year claims x uplift x (2 legs + bench test + admin) (extra easy-swap claims) swap overhead = refurb/QA + admin + spare-pool carrying + non-return rate x unit cost x (1 - invoice recovery) LED engine parts are excluded: the included lifetime LED warranty already owns them, so they are not counted twice. Estimated cost floor = expected cost x (1 + risk buffer) / (1 - target margin) Plan rate = tier rate for the term x basis (MAP or actual selling price) Price = ceil(max(plan rate, safe floor)) driver shown per product Order rules, applied in this order: 1 Validate quantities (whole numbers, 0 or more) 2 Include only eligible listed products; the v2 profile also tests a minimum merchandise value 3 Subtotal = sum of qty x price 4 Volume discount only if selected; none by default in v3, never below the estimated cost floor 5 Order minimum 6 Proposed rules: above the pricing review alert -> VALUE REVIEW; show the modeled price, never reduce it. Previous rules: hard-cap manual review.

What these estimates include and leave out

What this model can't tell you yet

PCL Protect is the included three-year standard defect warranty with eligible Lifetime LED coverage. PCL Protect+ is the optional five-year upgrade with replacement-first service and PCL-paid standard shipping both ways. This tool estimates the included warranty cost separately from the upgrade’s added costs and price. Three years remains an internal fallback for the upgrade. Prices are simulations until the eligible models, costs, capacity and contract terms are approved. Every claim rate, cost, uptake and mix default is a placeholder. The model list is illustrative and is not an approved eligibility register. MAP comes from the October 2026 dealer price list; Pro Pendant and Zoom Mini (*) come from Shopify. Built-in tests run on fixed defaults at the bottom of the page.

  • Claim rates are placeholders. Real rates need claims divided by units in the field by model and age (cohort exposure), not shares of Asana cases.
  • Shopify now supplies current inventory costs for many variants, with eight sold candidate variants missing costs. They are not confirmed landed costs. This simulator still uses tier percentages as placeholders; do not mistake them for observed model costs. Repair and actual freight costs remain missing.
  • LED engine parts are excluded from the core engine at every age, and ongoing LED service after active coverage is unmodeled. Enter an evidenced allowance in the funding worksheet; it remains a planning estimate with a stated horizon.
  • Plan cancellations and refunds are not calculated. Annual plan receipts assume the full modeled selling price is collected and retained. Estimate cancellations and refunds separately before approving prices or funding.
  • Legacy PCL Protect plan: accounting shows 84 plans + 10 Year 2 add-ons sold Aug 2024 to Aug 2025. At list price that's $9,606 of revenue. Actual selling prices, fulfillment costs and profit were not available in the reviewed sources, so the legacy plan's net contribution is unknown.
  • Review service after launch and assess demand once quotes have completed the normal sales cycle. Early results cannot establish Year 4-5 reliability for new buyers; use older installed cohorts for that.
Glossary of terms

Plain-language definitions for the labels used in this calculator.

PCL Protect
The standard warranty included with eligible new equipment. It provides three years of defect coverage and eligible Lifetime LED engine coverage under the approved terms.
PCL Protect+
The optional paid upgrade. The recommended five-year plan adds defect coverage in Years 4 and 5 and replacement-first service with PCL-paid standard shipping both ways through Year 5.
Replacement first
PCL sends an approved replacement before receiving the faulty product back. Stockout, return and customer-agreed repair rules still apply.
MAP
Minimum advertised price. The model uses this reference equipment price for plan rates and placeholder unit costs; it is not necessarily the price the church pays.
Actual equipment value
The equipment selling price after the equipment discount. It excludes the protection plan itself.
Projected added service cost
The estimated extra cost of providing PCL Protect+ beyond the included PCL Protect warranty, over the full plan term. It is based on assumed claims, repairs, shipping and replacement costs.
Estimated PCL plan profit
PCL Protect+ receipts minus projected added service cost. This is also called contribution. It excludes fees, overhead, cancellations, refunds, unmodeled LED costs and the separate included-warranty cost. It is not company net profit.
Net profit
What remains after all relevant costs and expenses. This calculator does not establish PCL’s final net profit.
Lifecycle or plan term
The whole coverage period. A five-year cost or profit figure covers the full five-year term, even when the plan price is collected upfront.
Claim rate
The assumed number of covered service events per product in a coverage year. The calculator’s rates are placeholders, not verified failure rates.
Uptake
The share of eligible products sold with PCL Protect+. It does not necessarily equal the share of orders that buy a plan.
Eligible share
The share of products assumed to qualify for PCL Protect+. Only products on the approved list can actually be offered a plan.
Unit cost
The estimated cost of the equipment to PCL. The current simulator uses a percentage of MAP as a placeholder, rather than a verified cost for each model.
Cost floor
The lowest modeled plan price that covers projected added service cost, the risk buffer and the target contribution margin. It is an estimate until costs are verified.
Plan rate
The percentage of equipment value used to propose a plan price. The calculator uses the higher of that price and the cost floor, rounded up.
Risk buffer
An extra allowance above expected service costs to help cover uncertainty.
Target margin
The desired share of the plan price left after buffered modeled service costs. A 50% margin means half the price, not a 50% markup on cost. It is not a company net-profit margin.
Pricing review alert
A flag when a modeled plan price exceeds the selected share of equipment value, 10% by default. Review customer value and service economics; it does not automatically reduce the price or limit coverage.
Claim uplift
An allowance for extra service demand when replacement-first service makes customers more likely to request help. It is an assumption.
Non-return and recovery
An allowance for replacements whose original faulty units are not returned, reduced by the share of replacement cost expected to be recovered. Recovery is not assumed merely because an invoice was sent.
Spare pool
Replacement equipment kept ready for service. Carrying cost is the modeled cost of maintaining that availability.
Cohort
A group of products sold during the same period. The annual model follows one sales year through its coverage life.
Stress test
A scenario with more claims or higher costs. It keeps the sold plan price fixed to show what happens when service costs rise.
Whole program cost
Included PCL Protect warranty costs plus added PCL Protect+ costs, counted once, and the entered allowances. Missing LED, overhead and selling-cost allowances keep the funding worksheet incomplete.
Funding target
A planning estimate of money needed for future obligations. The worksheet uses the higher of stressed core costs and buffered expected core costs, then adds the entered allowances. It is not an approved budget or accounting reserve.
Lifetime LED and End of Service
Eligible LED engine defect coverage continues until the model’s published End of Service under the final supply and notice rules. It does not mean unlimited fixture coverage or a guarantee that parts will exist forever.
Historical comparison rules
The previous pricing scenario, retained only for internal comparison. Its restrictions and discounts are not the current recommended offer.
